This is definitely the menu for those who are brave and love to explore new things. For the average person, just hearing grilled scorpions, crispy fried crickets, live octopus, smoked rats or maggot-laced cheese... is enough to be awe-inspiring, let alone enjoy.
It is often said: “What is delicious for one person can be a nightmare for another, and vice versa.” However, just listening to the following dishes is enough to understand that it is a real nightmare:
1. Fried breaded crickets
In some Asian countries such as Hong Kong or Korea, the crickets are cleaned and then breaded and fried as delicious as fried shrimp. Because, it is not easy to catch enough crickets to make this dish. In addition to crickets, people also fry locusts and grasshoppers because these insects have a greasy taste.2. Live pig brain
Pork brain is nothing too strange to Vietnamese people, however, in Peru, people can eat raw pork brain with mustard and consider it a special specialty of the region. Of course, this dish needs to be seasoned with many spices and served with raw vegetables to reduce the fishy smell.
3. Crispy fried cockroaches
Cockroaches are animals that are always considered the most foul and unpleasant, yet it is an attractive dish that is sold a lot in the markets of Mexicans. They have a way to remove the smell of cockroaches and then put them in a pan of boiling fat for about 5 minutes. After that, the cockroaches are picked out, sprinkled with pepper and paprika for people to enjoy.
4. Smoked rat meat
Wherever you go in Guinea, people will sell a lot of grilled rat skewers or smoked rat dishes served with rice and a little fresh onion salad. If you're a rat-fear, it's best to never order "guinea pig's stomach" because they will immediately bring you a carefully prepared whole mouse.
5. Steamed pupae
Deep-steamed pupae are sold a lot in Thai markets. For those who are not afraid of worms and larvae, this must be a favorite dish.
6. Grilled scorpion
This must be a real nightmare. Ordinary people, when they see large scorpions with full claws and long tails neatly placed on the plate, will shudder, even faint. However, for Cambodians, only guests are invited to this rare dish, because according to them, scorpions contain a lot of protein and amino acids that are beneficial for human resistance.
7. Live Octopus
Raw octopus, also known as Sannakji, is a specialty of Korea. The live octopuses are seasoned with a little sesame oil and then placed on a plate. Even when put in the mouth, the small proboscis will still wiggle if you chew carelessly. This is definitely not a dish for the faint-hearted.
8. The womb of a deer
People won't believe there is this dish until they see them. Deer wombats are very rare and not easy to buy, this dish is also mixed with mushrooms, black chicken, banana flowers and even a little deer tendon. A small bowl costs 158 yuan (equivalent to 20 USD). Hong Kong people believe that this dish has the effect of "toning the kidneys and yang, increasing vitality" for men and beautifying the skin for women.
9. Fried Tarantulas Spiders
Black spiders, big bodies with long legs still full of hair, deep fried and swarmed on a plate must not be an easy dish to eat. However, for Hondurans, it is a delicious specialty. If you are brave enough, try it once, maybe you will no longer be afraid of spiders.
10. Steamed lamb eggplant
On the Nordic farms, steamed lamb eggplant is still considered a "complete tonic" food for men. However, not everyone can prepare this dish because if you don't know how to marinate it, its taste is difficult to swallow.
11. Deep fried bees
No longer a ferocious insect ready to attack humans when angry, bees have been brought into the kitchen and become a delicious and greasy specialty. The difficulty of preparing this dish is to cut off all the bee venom before frying.
12. Cazu Marzu
Cazu Marzu is a maggot-infused cheese found only in the Italian city of Sardinia. Locals say they mix these transparent, still-living larvae into the cheese bowl to increase the creaminess and help the cheese have a special taste. Before eating, people will have to use a spoon to crush them so that the larvae are evenly mixed into the cheese. This dish is enjoyed with bread and milk like any other regular cheese.
